Two car crash kills Saginaw man

Posted: Updated:

(11/22/11) - One man is dead and a high school student is in critical condition after a two-car crash in Saginaw County Tuesday morning.

The accident happened just before 7 a.m. on M-13 just north of Willard Road. That's in Albee Township near the Saginaw-Genesee County line.

Saginaw County Sheriff deputies tell us the 17-year-old Chesaning High School student was on his way a class in Bridgeport Township when the accident happened.

Deputies say the teenage driver hit an oncoming Mustang.

The white Mustang was driven by a 37-year-old man from Saginaw.

His name has not been released, but we are told he was on his way to work in Montrose when the accident happened.

Investigators believe the 17-year-old driving the silver Buick was trying to pass a slower moving truck when he encountered the Mustang.

The driver of the Mustang tried to veer off the side of the road, but it was too late and he was hit in the driver side door, nearly snapping his car in half.

He was thrown from the car and later pronounced dead at St. Mary's of Michigan.

The teenager was not wearing his seatbelt, and deputies say his head actually smashed into the windshield.

He is listed in critical condition at Covenant HealthCare.

"Everybody's in a hurry now a days and I know there are slower moving vehicles, farm vehicles out and stuff, but if you're going to pass, 7 o'clock in the morning it's still dark out. You've got to make sure it's clear. Give yourself some time, you know you don't make up so much time by passing people. You might get to work a minute early but that's all," said Sgt. Mark Garabelli with the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department.

The road was closed for about three hours while an accident reconstruction team investigated.

No word yet on any charges.
