Plans for a new Meijer store under consideration

Posted: Updated:
SWARTZ CREEK (WJRT) -

(12/09/11) - A Michigan-based retailer is not only moving into a new area, but it also wants to get bigger.

The Swartz Creek city manager says Meijer has submitted amended plans to build a store in Swartz Creek on Morrish Road just off I-69.

Back in 2006, the site plan called for a store being built closer to 207,000 square feet. Then it went down to around 160,000.

Under the amended plan, the store would be closer to the orginal size.

City leaders will look over the amended plan next month.

City Manger Paul Bueche says the store will add many new jobs. "Anytime you can build close to 200,000 square feet of new construction retail, that will create 300-400 new jobs. I think that is profound."

Bueche also says contractors have been calling his office inquiring about the propriety which could lead to additional businesses and construction.

The project has been in the works since 2006.

Site work did began in October.

There is no opening date, but the city manager says construction could start next year.
