Humane Society of Genesee County launching Holiday of Hope

BURTON (WJRT) -

(12/15/11) - The Humane Society of Genesee County in Burton is gearing up for Saturday's 15th annual Holiday of Hope event.

"We'll have vendors for shopping, we'll have our annual cookie walk, and holiday photos with your pet," said Humane Society community relations coordinator Tara Sturgis.

At the heart of the open house is an adoption drive, designed to place as many pets with new owners in time for Christmas.

"We've set a goal of 50 animals. It could be rabbits, birds, puppies or kittens. It's the end of the year, and we'd like some of them, especially the ones that have been with us for a while, to find a good home," Sturgis said.

To make that happen, the organization is offering up a few incentives.

"We are running some pretty good adoption specials. Some cats for as low as $25, dogs as low as $50," Sturgis said.

Right now, the Humane Society is jam packed nearly to capacity with more than 150 animals waiting to be adopted. In fact, the staff here was even caught off guard a bit this morning, with an unexpected arrival.

"We did have a surprise. We had a terrier abandoned in one of our back runs. It just goes to show how many animals we have and that we're obviously in need of adoption," Sturgis said.

Speaking of pets in need of adoption, there's a certain showstopper ready to make his debut.

"This little guy and his siblings will be going up for adoption on Saturday. They're sheltie jack russell mixes, about eight to nine weeks old," Sturgis said.

While some of these pets might need a little training, there's a holiday gift each is willing to give back.

"Oh, yes, the gift of love. Yes," Sturgis said.
