Eviction proceedings underway for Saginaw's GlobalWatt

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(12/23/11) - ABC12 has learned eviction proceedings have begun for a business hoping to bring 500 jobs to Saginaw in five years.

We're talking about solar company GlobalWatt located on Saginaw's north east side.

The landlord of the property, where GlobalWatt sits, confirmed the business is supposed to be out of the building on Jan. 9, 2012.

It's no secret people have been skeptical about this business actually doing business in Saginaw, especially in the last year, especially when the CEO has declined to comment on production or how many people have been hired.

"Saginaw offers a huge opportunity for us to get the resources and capabilities that are there," said GlobalWatt CEO Sanjeev Chitre in August of 2010.

Friday night, by email, he told ABC12 it is now, "...economically difficult for GlobalWatt to maintain the present business infrastructure in Saginaw." Chitre cited changing dynamics and pricing in the solar markets.

It was two years ago, mid-December, when California based GlobalWatt Inc. announced it would bring 500 jobs and invest $177 million into making solar panels in Saginaw. The business opted for Mid-Michigan instead of Texas.

The state of Michigan awarded millions in tax credits, A MEGA grant included, and the break was to come when jobs were created.

"My fear was that they just weren't headed in that direction," said former GlobalWatt consultant Chris Philbrick in August of 2010.

He had previously gone public with his concerns over the company's business practices.

Friday, when he heard about the eviction proceedings and other possible announcements?

"I'm not surprised, based on public record," Philbrick said.

There was no formal announcement from GlobalWatt Friday night, just that email we referenced. It also indicated the company intends to maintain, at least, some Michigan presence.

Chitre says something more concrete will be released in the next 10 days.
