FLUSHING (WJRT) -
(1/02/12) - Funeral arrangements have been made for a Flushing High School senior killed Friday in a strange incident in Indiana.
17-year-old Brandon Spangler was shot as he and his family were about to play paintball on wooded property in Shelby County, in central Indiana.
Authorities have said the property owner fired a gun into the woods after hearing what he thought was a coyote attack.
Spangler was hit once and died.
Flushing High School students and staff head back to class Tuesday for their first day back after the holiday break.
Wednesday, some will attend a funeral.
"He was a wonderful son, amazing brother, cousin, friend," said Brandon's mother Joanne Krampe. "Just an all around great kid."
He senior in high school with a bright future ahead of him.
But Brandon died Friday during what was supposed to be a family game of paintball.
He was visiting his father in Indiana and was scheduled to be back in Mid-Michigan for school Tuesday, on his way to finish out the school year after the new year.
ABC12 spoke with his mother, by phone, Monday afternoon.
"He was going to study computers. He actually went to skill center and just did a big project, to do a program, for his first semester," Krampe said.
Principal Jason Melynchek said, by email, he was an outstanding young man.
Academically, he was in the top 20 percent of his class and had been an honor roll student throughout his high school career.
He said Spangler was a quality young man who will be dearly missed at Flushing High School.
Krampe described her son, the one with the great smile, as very adventurous and smart.
He was the family's "go to" guy to fix whatever was broken.
Now his family is leaning on each other to get through this difficult time.
The school district's crisis team will be on hand Tuesday morning and busses will be provided Wednesday to take people to Spangler's funeral.
Melynchek said a moment of silence will be held in his honor.
