(01/06/12) - A home explosion in Tuscola County left one person dead. Authorities said they discoverd the body of the homeowner, 51-year-old Jon Corba inside the home. The home exploded Friday afternoon just after 1 p.m. on Sergent Road in Arbela Township.
Dale Cleland was working in his yard when he saw the 100-year-old farm home go up in flames. "I definitely heard two explosions, no doubt about that. I thought it was someone screwing around hunting, then I came around and saw the house totally engulfed in flames."
D/Sgt. Scott Jones from the Tuscola County Sheriff's Department said Cleland wasn't the only one who tried to help. "Many of the neighbors responded to the scene, however the house was fully engulfed by the time they arrived."
The Tuscola County Sheriff's Department and the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal spent the day digging through debris left behind in this massive explosion. But it wasn't until evening that detectives confirmed someone had been inside the home. "Initial indications from the fire marshal said it could be anything from a gas leak being accidental up to the homeowner purposely setting the home on fire at an attempt to harm himself.
"It's sad, one day here's, the next he's gone, I don't know if they will ever figured out what exactly happened," Cleland said.
State Police Bomb Squad was also called out to the scene for a suspicious duffel bag but that turned out to be filled with only personal items.
