New businesses moving into Saginaw Township

Posted: Updated:

(01/12/12) - Saginaw Township officials say they're seeing some positive signs that the economy is picking up.

Right now the township is getting an increasing number of calls about commercial space from realtors, and it is preparing to welcome several new businesses.

One of the new businesses will go up on Bay Road near Shattuck Road. An old Burger King will be torn down and a new building will be built for an O'Reilly's Auto Parts store.

It will set next to Redmond Automotive. "It won't hurt us at all, in fact they'll be good neighbors there some of the stuff we do, they don't. And often times people like that, they'll refer customers to us because they can't do it," explained Ken Redmond, the owner of Redmond Automotive that has been in business for 70 years.

O'Reilly's is expected to be up and running later this year, so is an Ulta Beauty store which will go into this addition by Babies 'R' Us.

"Ulta, which is going to be located adjacent to Babies 'R' Us is a huge coup, I think, for Saginaw Township. It's a beauty, health, makeup sort of store so it really appeals to a younger market and helps draw some of those SVSU as well as from the greater area," said Bridget Smith, Saginaw Township's assistant director of community development.

Ulta should be open by March. It's completely new to the area, as the nearest stores are in the Lansing and Detroit areas.

Smith says aside from new builds, the township is noticing another trend. She says more and more businesses are choosing to remodel existing buildings and give them a new lease on life.

One example is the former Sears warehouse at the corner of Fashion Square Boulevard and Schust Road.

Mid-Michigan based Bierlein Companies plans to remodel it into a combination of retail, office and restaurant space.

It sits just across the corner from Morley Companies, which has added hundreds of jobs in recent years.

"Just goes to show how economic development kind of builds one project after another and  they're all inter-related," added Smith.

Just down the road, Logan's Roadhouse is preparing the corner of Fashion Square Boulevard and Tittabawassee Road, for a grand opening this summer.

Their new neighbors at Glidden Professional can't wait. "I think it's going to attract a lot of additional businesses when they finish all this up it's going to be really good for the area," said Scout Sproull, the manager at Glidden Professional.

Along with the four new businesses already listed, Smith tells us a fifth is in the works at the Green Acres Plaza.
