(01/23/12) - It appears two Native American Tribes are betting there will be enough demand for more Mid-Michigan casinos. Details of a downtown Lansing facility were unveiled Monday, as plans for a Flint Township casino continue to move forward.
ABC12 spoke with Flint Township officials who tell us the plans for a casino in Mid-Michigan are still in the works.
Monday afternoon Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians met with Lansing city officials to present their plans for a $245 million Kewadin casino.
The Bay Mills tribe already owns 28 acres north of the Genesee Valley Center, in Flint Township. Last fall they began meeting with local government and business leaders about their plans to build a casino on the site.
Flint Township leaders say the tribe still wants to build a casino near Lennon and Dutcher Roads, but the tribe has to clear up legal issues before they move forward.
Meantime, Backers of the Casino in Lansing say they would build near the Lansing Center. Lansing's Mayor says the casino would create 2,200 jobs and raise money for public safety and college scholarships for high school students. The plan would need approval from the Interior Department.
The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe that owns Soaring Eagle Casino in resort in Mt. Pleasant says they are against the construction of Lansing's casino because it would build on non-tribal land.
