BAY COUNTY (WJRT) -
(02/09/12) - A Bay County bar owner is asking the community to support his plan to have topless waitresses.
This is the second time the Silver Derby bar has applied for a topless activity permit. The first time it was denied.
The bar sits in Garfield Township, in the small community of Crump.
The Silver Derby's owner wants to offer topless waitresses for certain events like bachelor parties.
"Definitely say no, I have three kids that go to school right here and I don't think we need that right here," said Chantelle Drouin who says her family likes the Silver Derby.
But Chantelle says this proposal is indecent. "Dirty people and bad money."
The Silver Derby's owner was not available for comment Thursday.
But we did speak to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, that's who has the final say on the topless activity permit. A spokeswoman says the application needs local support to get the permit. The Garfield Township board will vote on Monday night. That 6 p.m. meeting has been moved to the Crump Fox Club in anticipation of a large crowd.
"We've been through this twice before, it's a waste of taxpayers time and money, you know the people don't want it, it's not needed here," said Gary Rezmer, a Bay County resident.
But not everyone feels that way about this controversy in Crump.
"It's his business, he can do what he wants with it. I think every small town outta have one," said Mike Lynch, Garfield Township resident.
"I think if the township doesn't want it, then I think that's probably a good idea, but you know free enterprise is free enterprise," added David Stringer, a Bay County resident.
