FLINT (WJRT) -
(02/10/12) - Eleven individuals, businesses and organizations were honored Friday morning for the work they do with Genesee County children. The award winners all feel a strong need to give their best for the next generation.
Priority Children held its 17th annual Children's Champion Awards at Flint's Riverfront Residence Inn with 900 people in attendance.
Among those honored was the 21st Century Program at Pierce Elementary in Flint. Eighty at-risk students play after school sports, receive mentoring and are fed dinner.
"I just love working with children. I love to positively impact their lives and help them be successful," said Marjona Kemp, a 21st Century worker.
Another volunteer with the program received the Caring Adult Award.
"I came up in the streets myself, came up really rough. When I got older I made a commitment to myself that I was going to do everything I can to make sure other children didn't fall into the same category I fell into," Sanford Hoyle said.
A husband-wife team called Foster Hope received an award for their work with older children in the foster system.
"They've learned skills they never knew existed. Many kids who've gone through our foster program now have an opportunity to be successful," said Ginelle Barry.
A Goodrich High School senior feels compassion for less-fortunate children and spends many hours each week reaching out to them.
"Kids with diabetes and special needs, it's hard to catch a break. I think everyone needs somewhere to belong," explained Andi Trubiano.
A hardworking volunteer was named Outstanding Senior for his work with Old Newsboys.
"It's a fantastic organization. We helped almost 5,500 kids this past Christmas. We're still going with our shoe, boot and coat program," said Chris Hamilton.
Priority Children's motto sums up the reason for the award program: to provide a safe place to learn and play and to make Genesee County the best place to raise children.
