(02/14/12) - The Crim Festival of Races is still six months away, but anticipation is already building. Registration for the Crim's adult training program opened up Tuesday morning.
"We want people to come out and register this week and get going and get excited. We've got people on our Facebook page that are excited about it," said Crim Training Program Coordinator Jody Pace.
The 15-week program begins in May, with a few changes from last year.
"We have two different levels for participants to do. We have the time goal, which will focus more on track work and speed work. We also have the Goal to Finish, which is for anyone of any activity level," Pace said.
Pace has already seen plenty of past participants out hitting the bricks of Saginaw Street.
"We do have people out in the streets right now, running informally. A lot of them are in our training program, and they go out on Tuesday nights and do their thing downtown. Yeah, we want people out now, and ready to go," Pace said.
Registration for the Aug. 25 race itself begins this Sunday morning.
"We will be sending out a discount coupon to all the past participants from the last four years, so keep an eye out for the that coupon in your email," said Crim Race Director Pat Ball.
Along with changes to the training program, come changes to the Crim 10 mile.
"What we want to do this year is really enhance the runner experience. One of the things we'll do is work to alleviate some of the congestion at the start by adding wave starts. We know that's something that runners like," Ball said.
This year's Crim Festival of Races falls shortly after the Olympics wrap up in London. You never know, Flint could be the first stop after the games for a few medallists.
"We're probably two weeks after the marathon. We're hoping that we get some of those runners here, wouldn't that be cool? It would be very awesome if that happened," Ball said.
Online applications for the race should be available later this week.
