New information on death of elderly Flint man

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/21/12) - ABC12 is learning more about the death of an Elderly Flint man Monday. The 86-year-old was found dead in his truck that was parked in his driveway. Investigators say preliminary autopsy results show John Morgan died from a pre-existing heart and lung condition. They add hypothermia played a role in his death.

As ABC12 first reported, Morgan was found Monday morning inside his truck in the driveway of his home on East Parkway on Flint's North side. Police believe he may have been trying to stay warm after his power was shut off last week.

A close friend of Morgan tells ABC12 that Morgan had the money to pay the $291 consumers energy bill, but she believes he simply forgot to pay it.

Now, ABC12 is taking a closer look at what you can do to help protect you elderly loved ones from similar situations. There are programs in place to prevent elderly customers from power shut off in the winter months, but the utility companies have to be notified.

In 2009, the death of Marvin Schur, who froze to death in his Bay City Home, promoted a new state law protecting most customers from power shut off in the winter months. Despite the changes, Morgan's death raises new questions.

"There is a system in place, but apparently this gentleman wasn't aware of it or maybe he chose not to deal with that," said Kathy Boles with the Valley Area Agency on Aging.

Boles says her agency works closely with consumers energy to protect folks like Morgan, but says sometimes it takes a whole community to protect each other. "If you know of an elderly person in your community and you know they live alone it's important that you stop by and check on them."

One of the programs in place to help protect senior citizens is called KISS, or Keeping Independent Seniors Safe. It's free of charge. The number is 810-760-1092
