Suspect's supporters post reward to "find killer"

Posted: Updated:

(02/21/12) - He is the only person charged in his girlfriend's murder in Lapeer County, and his father spoke only to ABC12.

Kenneth Grondin, just 19-years-old and from Lapeer, faces one count of open murder and the possibility of life in prison, if convicted, in the November shooting death of 20-year-old Andrea Eilber.

Grondin, held in the Lapeer County Jail without bond, has been bound over to circuit court for trial, but returns for motions next week.

His attorney, Michael Manley, tells ABC12 they are appealing the bind over, want bond and a hearing regarding his statement to police.

Grondin's father, also named Kenneth Grondin, stands firm. He says his son is innocent.

ABC12 asked if the teenager had anything to do with Eilber's murder.

"No," Grondin said. "He had nothing to do with her murder."

"He's 19-years-old. He was going to college at U of M-Flint. A great kid.  He's never been in trouble," Grondin said.

The boy's supporters have posted a $5,000 reward. "To find the killer," Grondin said.

It doubles what was first put up by Kroger where Grondin and girlfriend Eilber worked.

The couple had been dating for about eights months, according to Grondin.

"She was starting to be like family."

She was found murdered at a relative's Mayfield Township home. She was watching the home and had been shot.

"My job is not to obtain convictions, but to find the truth," said Lapeer County Prosecutor Byron Konschuh. "The evidence that we presented at the preliminary exam tied him to the scene physically, with DNA, and with statements he gave implicated that he had some involvement."

But investigators can't say it is or isn't Grondin in surveillance footage in Burton, Nov.15, and then also in Davison, the night before, hours after Eilber was killed.

That person used her credit and debit cards and even had her pin number.

Michigan State Police are taking tips.

Please call the Lapeer Post at 810-664-2905, EXT. 420.

Flint Area Crime Stoppers will also pay up to $1,000 for information in the case. Please call 800-422-JAIL.

Grondin's supporters are paying for a billboard advertising the information.

It goes up, along I-69 in Genesee County, next week.

"We want to find the killer for Andrea's family and to clear my son's name," Grondin said.
