Kettering University prepares to host Romney campaign rally

FLINT (WJRT) -

(02/24/12) - A local institution is getting ready to step back into the political spotlight. Flint's Kettering University will host Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Saturday.

The folks at Kettering just got notice on Thursday that the Romney campaign was interested in using their Recreation Center for a rally.

"There's a lot to do and a little time to do it," said Kettering junior Genuine Banner.

You can usually find Banner working the front desk at the rec center on campus. But now through Saturday, he's got a different assignment.

"[I'm doing] some setups and tear downs with the equipment, some chairs, tables, and whatnot," he said.

Banner is one of 50 students who signed up to volunteer at a campaign rally Mitt Romney is holding at Kettering. ABC12 was inside the rec center Friday afternoon while Romney's team was scoping out the facility.

The folks at Kettering University are no strangers to having visitors on campus. They hosted then-Senator Obama and the King of Sweden four years ago.

"We like to work with national dignitaries to help them learn about the excellence of our stem education. And this is a wonderful way to get that message to the dignitaries," said Kettering University chief public relations officer Pat Mroczek.

Mroczek says her team is also working overtime -- preparing for a deluge of local, national, and international media.

"We are showing the hospitality of Flint," Mroczek said.

Some extra-special hospitality is in store for Ann Romney. Her father, Edward Davies, graduated from the school in 1938, when it was known as the General Motors Institute of Technology.

"In some ways, this is like a family reunion," explained Mroczek.

"It should be fairly exciting I think," said Banner.

ABC12 will have coverage of the Romney rally, as well as one Ron Paul is scheduled to attend at Central Michigan University Saturday evening, beginning on ABC12 News at 6 Saturday.
