Teen charged in shooting of 12-year-old boy

(03/12/12) - A 16-year-old person of interest in the shooting of a 12-year-old boy is in custody.

The 12-year-old is recovering at a Saginaw hospital after he was shot Saturday as he walking along an east side street with two teenagers, in the area of Hartsuff and 12th. It's a neighborhood that's been hearing a lot of gunfire lately.

People that live in that neighborhood say they hear the gunshots, and when they do, they hope no one is hit by the bullets.

That was not the case this time.

"We have had several windows shot out here at Emmaus House," said Emmaus House director Sister Marietta Fritz.

The Emmaus House is a home where woman who have been in trouble with the law come to live as they transition back into society, women who sadly are not scared by the sound of gunfire.

"They do become immune to it and I'm probably immune to it because I have lived here for 28 years, so, 'oh, that's just some gunshots.' You forget that there might be a person or a child, in this case, at the end of that gunshot," Fritz said.

Someone was on the other end of a gunshot fired at the corner of Hartsuff and 12th on the city's eastside Saturday afternoon, a neighborhood dotted with abandoned homes. A 12-year-old boy, his birthday was just last week, was shot in the abdomen.

"This was a random act of violence, just stupidity," said Saginaw Police Detective Sergeant Joe Dutoi.

Dutoi says the 12 year old was not the intended victim, perhaps the 14 year old, or the 17 year old he was walking with were the possible targets.

"Children playing with guns or using guns to settle fights," Dutoi said.

Unlike other shootings, police got cooperation this time.

"This time they stepped up and we were able to perform our jobs as we are supposed to, and it lead us to this person of interest," Dutoi said.

The person of interest is just 16 years old.

"We have to somehow train our young people, or raise them, that they are not that violent," Fritz said.

The 16 year old was charged in juvenile court with three counts of assault with intent to murder, but will most likely be arraigned as an adult later this week.
