Sheriff: Woman raped at Flint church, suspect in jail

Posted: Updated:

(03/29/12) - Sheriff Robert Pickell says Albert Haymer assaulted one woman and also attempted to attack another, but church staff members were able to intervene.

Pickell says Haymer approached the women at the MTA bus station, downtown, Tuesday afternoon and lured them, by promising food, to the First Presbyterian Church just about two blocks away.

The first incident, according to Pickell, happened at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

"At the church, the suspect coerced her into the men's restroom by placing what she thought was a gun to the back of her head. He physically, forced sex upon her," Pickell says.

Pickell says Haymer left the church and the 24-year-old woman reported her rape to the receptionist.

The sheriff says, one hour later, he returned to the church with another woman, but a church staff member recognized the man from surveillance video.

Pickell says one of his sergeants happened to be in the parking lot, the church is right next door to the McCree Building, and Sheriff's Department deputies chased the man down.

He had to be tasered a number of times, was arrested near the UM-Flint Pavilion and remains in jail.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says his office issued three charges tied to him resisting arrest.

Leyton says prosecutors are waiting for additional information before deciding on additional charges.

Pastor Dr. John Musgrave says the incident is not going to change their mission and who they are.

"The doors are open. The security cameras are on," Musgrave says.
