Mid-Michigan inventor is seeing his dream come true

(03/29/12) - Last summer we told you about Grab-a-Cane, which was invented by a Tuscola County man. Here's an update: Grab-a-canes will be going into production soon.

The operation may be small now, but it has great potential. Cass Valley Enterprises has agreed to assemble Grab-a-Canes.

"They're taking over all assembly, which leaves me more time for motivational speaking and promoting the product," said Donald Beyette, Grab-a-Cane inventor.

"Our staff is learning the procedure so they in turn can teach individuals with disabilities," said Robert Brown, Cass Valley Enterprises director.

Grab-a-Cane was invented by Beyette a few years ago. He was born with a deformed right arm and suffered serious injuries in a work-related accident. He thought of Grab-a-Cane when he dropped his car keys.

"The snow is blowing and I'm trying to get someone to come over and pick my keys up for me," Beyette told us last June.

Grab-a-Cane is known for being able to pick up a dime laying on the floor. About 10 Cass Valley workers are expected to assemble Grab-a-Canes once orders begin arriving.

"We figure once we're in full production, at least 100 a week," Brown said.

Beyette goes out of his way to make sure components used in Grab-a-Cane are made in the U.S. The basic cane comes from Virginia. The clamp is made in Attica, Michigan. Even the fishing line used to make the cable is made in the U.S.

Beyette is hoping Grab-a-Canes are selected by Wal-Mart through its Get on the Shelf promotion.

"We're not in the top 10 yet, but we will be because I have faith," he said.

Beyette has also developed a sturdier version of the cane, which can support a user weighing as much as 700 pounds.

"This is a passion with me. If I don't make a lot of money with this, it doesn't matter because I'm providing jobs and opportunities for a lot of different people," Beyette said.
