General Motors to update 2014 Chevy Impala

NEW YORK (WJRT) -

(04/05/12) - General Motors often saves big announcements for the North American Auto Show in Detroit, but the company is showing some important upgrades this week at the New York Auto Show.

The Impala has been the flagship of the Chevy line up since 1958, but the last time the model had a serious update was in 2006.

"The biggest reaction I've seen from people in the industry is 'finally GM is really changing the Impala because it has been a long time,'" said Dr. Greg Davis, engineering professor at Kettering University.

The 2014 version is designed to knock the socks off those who love a full-size ride.

"It's a beautiful car, looking a lot more expensive than what it really is; both inside and outside," said Mark Reuss, General Motors North America president.

The updated Impala goes on sale in early 2013 as the tenth generation of what GM calls one of the industry's most enduring nameplates. The sheet metal has been re-sculpted and you'll have a choice to make under the hood - three engine options include the mild hybrid system called e-assist.

"You really have everything here. So I think we're going to get a lot of new buyers," Reuss said.

Chevy sold 171,000 old-style Impalas last year. The GM division hopes the re-design will be good competition for the Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon.

"People don't pay attention to the Impala too much because they're just so many of them but the large sedan is still a very important segment in America," Davis said.

Chevy is also making several improvements to the 2013 Traverse crossover. Among the changes, a new airbag system that offers more safety in a crash.

"It deploys between its two front seats to provide additional restraint to front occupants in side impacts," said Chris Perry, Chevrolet vice president.

The 2013 Buick Enclave will have a fresher look and more technology. The GMC Terrain will have more options in the coming model year.
