Father, son sell memorial shirts in Flint

FLINT (WJRT) -

(04/30/12) - At the corner of Fenton and Lincoln in Flint, inside an old bar, a new business has emerged as the result of ongoing violence in Flint.

With a computer, printer and a heat transfer press, Gene and Glen Reid run a small operation. The business fills an unfortunate need in Flint…many customers are relatives or friends of homicide victims. "Everybody comes in here and that's what they ask for 'hey, would you put R.I.P on it for us and put a picture,' and I guess that's how it got started," Gene said.

The Reid's opened G & G T-Shirt Shop several months ago and say they sell memorial shirts to 2-3 families a week.

As long as the homicide toll in Flint continues to climb, the Reid's will continue to make the shirts. Gene says he's not just in it for the money, it's also an opportunity to help ease a family's grief.

"It's a sad story why are we making them, it is a very sad story, but people want a picture on a T-shirt. It doesn't matter if it says R.I.P, but for memories of their family or friends, that's what it's all about."

The Reid's purchased the building several months ago with the intent of re-opening the Fenton Road Tavern with a print shop next door.

"We want to open the Tavern as soon as we can and do everything right here," Gene said.

Beginning with a parade that started at East Pierson Road and culminating at Berston Field House, rally-goers were met with a slew of vendors, activities and food that was put on by the Community Take-Back Organization. And with violent crime down in the city this year, the new theme attached to the event this time around was a "Celebration of Life".
