Dance studio holds fundraiser for CMN

(05/10/12) - The annual Children's Miracle Network is less than a month away and fundraising efforts are in full swing.

This week is crunch time for students from DeCamp Spotlight School of Dance. They spent most of the week on the final tweaks to their recital routines held at the University of Michigan Flint.

They're giving extra attention to a routine choreographed by Kasey Stark. The group's proudest routine is a dance dedicated to cancer patients.

"I just really wanted to create a number that creates a positive image for cancer and it shows how people are affected and how the community supports," Stark said.

"Listening to the song, it creates an atmosphere for it and I actually play a cancer patient in the number and the girls who are dancing with me are my support in it and it shows, artistically, the struggles that go through it and the happiness that can come out of a situation like this," Stark added.

Some of the proceeds from the recitals will be donated to the Children's Miracle Network. For the performers, the dance is very personal.

"The girls in the dance have given us a list of people in their lives that have been affected by cancer, that have either passed away or are battling it currently or who have won the battle. We're running the names behind the dancers," said dance instructor, Lindsay Fullwood.

More than 200 students are a part of the show. The first recital is Thursday night at 7 - they continue through Sunday at UM-Flint Theater.
