Michigan State Police 3rd District headquarters moving to Flint Township

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(05/18/12) - Changes are coming to State Police operations in Mid-Michigan. Not only are some posts being consolidated, but command officers are moving.

There will be a new location for the Third District Headquarters. It's a former bank building on Corunna Road in Flint Township and is located just west of the Flint post of the State Police. Currently the headquarters are in downtown Saginaw.

"It's going to be a better situation for them, rather than being downtown in a big office building away from all of the different posts that they serve," said Lloyd Fayling, Genesee County 911 director.

Workers are laying carpeting and painting in the building, which has been vacant for about four years. All of the remodeling and renovations should be wrapped up in the next few days. The command staff from headquarters should be moved in by the end of June.

About 14 state employees will make the move, including the district captain, two inspectors, and some district detectives.

"This allows them to be closer to Lansing for their meetings," Fayling said.

The move will not affect troopers at the Flint post or the staff at the Genesee County 911 Center. However, there will be landscaping changes to make one campus for the two buildings.

"We are going to join the two parking lots between the post and the bank and redesign the driveways for the public," Fayling said.

The Genesee County 911 Authority owns the bank building and will rent office space to the state police for less money than the state was charging for the offices in Saginaw. District Captain Rick Arnold -- who will make the move from Saginaw -- says it will save money and allow troopers to share more resources.

At one time, it was thought the Third District Headquarters would be located in a new post being built in Bay County, which should open by mid-July.

"The new Bay County post is already going to be at capacity with the other consolidations they've done," Fayling said.
