Abuelazam to face trial again?

Posted: Updated:

(05/23/12) - A Genesee County jury has convicted Elias Abuelazam, the man accused in nearly 20 stabbing attacks spanning three states.

He faces life in prison without parole when sentenced next month.

The question now, will he go to trial again?

Tuesday, the suspected serial stabber was found guilty of first degree premeditated murder in the death of Arnold Minor in Flint.

Abuelazam is suspected in 14 attacks in Genesee County, in 2010, but charged in nine.

Minor's murder is included in that count.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says there's still no decision about what exactly will happen in those other eight cases.

The same judge, Circuit Court Judge Judith Fullerton, is overseeing all of them.

"She (Fullerton) wants to set the Kellybrew case for August," Leyton said Tuesday.

Frank Kellybrew, who was murdered July 30, 2010 in Flint Township, just days before Arnold Minor was stabbed and killed Aug. 2, 2010, in Flint.

A garbage truck driver found Kellybrew's body in front of a Miller Road restaurant that morning.

"As I pulled into the driveway, I looked off to my left in the parking lot there, the joining parking lot and seen somebody laying on the ground there," said Robert Craglow during a court hearing in November of 2010.

The first person of interest in Kellybrew's killing?

A parole absconder later eliminated.

As the investigation into other area stabbings progressed, Elias Abuelazam was named as the suspect.

Leyton says there is strong evidence in this case as there was in the Minor murder.

"We have DNA evidence also in the Frank Kellybrew case," he says.

According to previous court testimony, Kellybrew's blood was found on Abuelazam's shoe.

Flint Township Police say they are ready to go if there is a trial.

"I don't know exactly how we're going to handle all those cases, but they're still there. The victims in those cases deserve justice as well."

"As we go forward, I will make the determination as to whether those other cases should be tried or worked out through some kind of negotiated plea," Leyton says.

Thursday marks the two year anniversary of what police believe was the start of a series of stabbings, in Genesee County, done by Abuelazam.

David Motley is the victim.

Abuelazam is not charged in that case.

Abuelazam is suspected in at least four attacks in two other states, Virginia and Ohio.

He is or was charged in Toledo, Ohio, but that victim has since died from an unrelated illness.

ABC12 attempted to contact both police and prosecutors in Ohio. We did not hear back.

It's not clear if that case will still move forward.
