Plane crashes in Shiawassee County

Posted: Updated:

(05/28/12) - The FAA is investigating a deadly, small plane crash in rural Shiawassee County.

The plane crashed on Beard Road near Bancroft Road, in Antrim Township.

The plane took off from a private airfield and was carrying the pilot and his wife.

Killed in the crash was 61-year-old Nancy Feldvary.

Her husband, 60-year-old Louis Feldvary, was the pilot and is in serious condition at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

The couple is from Virginia.

Police said shortly after take off, the plane landed on a barn.

"My understanding, there was a fly in here of vintage aircraft, for a luncheon, landed for luncheon and just took off when this occurred," said Shiawassee County Sheriff Sgt. Brian BeGole.

"It's horrible, something like that you don't expect, you watch those planes fly all the time," said Alicia Cubr.

Cubr owns Walkerville Family Mart, which is not far from the crash site. She said the community has always loved the shows the pilots put on display in the sky. "We've been in this area for almost 20 years, and this is the first time anything has happened out there."

The couple who owns the barn were inside their home when the plane came down - they were not hurt.

The owner of the private airstrip is also the same person who organizes the air show and has his friends be a part of the event.
