Mid-Michigan elementary school closing

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(05/30/12) - Thursday, students and teachers at Woodland Elementary celebrated their school's history - but that celebration comes with a bittersweet taste, because it's one of Woodland's last days as an elementary building.

"We're trying to stay positive about it, and just make it as easy on the kids as possible," said teacher Laura Hall.

Hall and other staff members brought in a bounce house and arranged other activities to help celebrate the school's 55 year history in the Carman Ainsworth District. The building will re-open as an Alternative High School.

For longtime teachers like Hall, the move is especially difficult. "Just so many memories, so many wonderful times and just thinking about what's going to happen with our students next year. We all have such a vested interest in these kids," Hall said.

Teachers and students will move to other schools in the district. Third grader Darwin Bostwick had hoped to complete his elementary career at Woodland. "We have music class and we get to have recorders and only two other schools get to do that. I think it's very cool that we get to do it," Darwin said.

"I can see some of my friends every day when I go to my new school, but some of my friends will go away. All my teachers when I started kindergarten won't be here...it's just sad," said student Anastasia Shaw.

"It's like you've been going to the school for all your lifetime. This is only school other then my pre-school that I've been to," said fifth grader Santos Gatica.

It's a move that's being repeated in school districts throughout the state because of declining enrollment and cuts in education funding. "They'll be able to go through the rest of all our Carman-Ainsworth Schools, which are great schools, but it's kind of like a family breaking up," Hall said.
