Local meth busts "almost quadruple" last year

Posted: Updated:

(06/07/12) - In just the last two weeks, local police have busted suspected meth labs at two separate Flint-area motels.

Officers with the Flint Area Narcotics Group, or FANG, were called to The Hometown Inn in Flint Township and The Great Western Inn in Mount Morris Township for suspected meth lab operations.

A FANG officer says that brings the total for the year to 12 similar busts, nearly quadruple the number from this time last year.

"They call it the 'shake and bake' or the 'one pop method,'" says the officer, who preferred we didn't reveal his name, since he works undercover. "That's why it's getting more popular, because it's so much easier to do. You can go to Meijer and get everything you need."

Genesee County Prosecutor, David Leyton, says he too has noticed an up-tick over the last year.  However, he says meth is still not as big a problem for Flint as other drugs, like crack.

For the better part of the last 10 years, meth use had been on the decline.

A national study from 2010 shows there were less than half the number of users compared to earlier in the decade.
