FLINT (WJRT) -

(06/23/12) - The body of a Mid-Michigan soldier killed in Afghanistan is now home.

25-year-old Sgt. Joseph Lilly of Flint died last week after he was hurt during an IED attack. Saturday, he was honored in a big way.

Hundreds of Patriot Guard riders road to Bishop International Airport to honor the life of the young soldier, as his body was flown in.

Lilly graduated from Carman Ainsworth High School in 2005 and joined the Army right away. He was a combat engineer, trained to go ahead of other troops and look for explosives.

Many riders made the ride Saturday to say 'thank you' to the American hero.

"I'm proud of all our members and we're all here for the same reason to support the family and show our respect and honor Sgt. Lilly.  I know it has an impact and it has an impact on us.  We say never forget," said the Michigan Patriot Guard Assistant State Captain known as "Parntr."

Flags will be lowered on Tuesday to half-staff to honor Lilly. He leaves behind a wife and 3-year-old son.

Visitation for Sgt. Lilly will take place on Sunday and Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home in Genesee County's Mundy Township.  The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning.  Lilly will be laid to rest at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.
