Memorial set for Carnel, Bennett has a troubled past

BAY CITY (WJRT) -

(07/04/12) - A memorial service is planned for the 4-yearold boy whose remains were found last week in Isabella County.

The service for Carnel Chamberlain will be Sunday, July 15 at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort Entertainment Hall in Mount Pleasant.

The man accused of assaulting Carnel, and who is a person of interest in the little boy's death, is behind bars following a detention hearing.

During the hearing, we learned more about the troubled past of Anthony Bennett.

Anthony Bennett is 20 years old, the prosecution claims he has only been employed for two days in his life, but he has had no problem finding trouble.

Bennett left the federal courthouse in Bay City Tuesday after a federal magistrate denied bond to the man accused of assaulting Carnel Chamberlain in late May or early June. Carnel went missing June 21.

His mother, Jamie Chamberlain, was relying on her boyfriend, Bennett, to watch the boy while she went to work, even though she eventually told police that Bennett physically abused Carnel in the past. Bennett's own past includes a troubled childhood and frequent run-ins with the law.

During Tuesday's detention hearing, we learned Bennett's parents put him into foster care when he was 11-years-old. His foster parent claims Bennett physically abused him. Bennett's father got parental rights back when Bennett turned 18 years old. The prosecution claims Bennett has been in trouble with the law seven times since the age of 17, for various crimes, mainly assaults.

One of the assaults was against his sister, who was at Tuesday's detention hearing. Each time he was sent to jail, he ended up violating the terms of his probation. Twice, he tested positive for synthetic marijuana, a drug that can cause violent and bizarre behavior. People told investigators Bennett has abused animals, and police were also called to investigate Bennett's possible abuse of Jamie Chamberlain this past March, but criminal charges were not filed in that case.
