MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -
(07/05/12) - There are 70,600 customers without power across the state
Thursday morning.
In Genesee County, 14 sub stations - that's nearly all in the county - have been
affected by the storm. More than 36,000 customers have no power in Genesee
County right now.
Shiawassee, Saginaw, Gratiot and Midland Counties have about 20,000 without
electricity combined.
The top priority right now is to make sure downed power lines are secured.
After that, the focus is restoring all power to hospitals, police stations and
fire departments.
A massive tree remains blocking one full lane of traffic, some 12 hours after it
first fell, says neighbor David Milton.
Milton say he lost power, but it is now back on.
Milton is one of the lucky ones, as thousands in Genesee County may have to wait
through the weekend for power.
Local hotels are already filling up.
Lauren Troop and her son Jaden have booked a room at Mundy Township's AmericInn
through Sunday because they don't have power.
"My son's a diabetic and he needs his insulin to stay cool and our house is
hotter than Tahiti," Troop said.
Consumers Energy is working with Genesee County's Emergency Management staff
to identify cooling centers.
