Bay City kicks off three-day fireworks festival, hundreds camping on fairgrounds

BAY CITY (WJRT) -

(07/05/12) - Bay City is hitting a major milestone this Fourth of July week, and they're celebrating 50 years of fireworks with a three-day event.

Thursday was their first night of festivities; and it was capped off with fireworks, of course.

Hundreds are camping at the park all weekend long to make sure they have the best view.

"I like the atmosphere, we're close to everything, you have that band there, music over here, she [my daughter] can go over to the fair, it works out," said Michele Sabourn of Bay City.

And despite the blistering heat mother nature is throwing at us, campers are finding their own ways to stay cool.

"The breeze helps, we've also got a generator to run air just in case," said Sandy Roth of Bay City.

But the real fun in camping at the fireworks festival is coming together with family.

For most, it's become a yearly tradition and the highlight of a Mid-Michigan summer.

"Everybody has food and that type of thing, it's not just a gathering of a lot of fireworks, it's a lot of friends, a lot interaction and friendly visits," Roth said.

Event organizers are expecting hundreds of thousands of people to come out for their big finale on Saturday.

If you're planning on coming out, make sure to get here early, the parks could be full as early as 5  or 6 p.m.

    (07/27/2014) - A Millington teen is coming home soon after spending five months in the hospital.Brady Gulledge was diagnosed with H1N1 back in February. Since then he's been in the Pediatric ICU at the University of Michigan's hospital. But on Facebook Sunday we learned he'll be moving to a new floor Wednesday and going home soon after. He still has a long road to recovery ahead of him but his supporters are happy he can continue to heal in the comfort of his own home.
