Grant will maintain 11 Flint police officers for six months, neighborhood watch groups grateful for support

FLINT (WJRT) -

(07/10/12) - A local grant is going to allow Flint to fund 11 officers on its police force, at least for another six months.

The C.S. Mott Foundation awarded the city more than $700,000 to keep those officers employed.

This comes after a similar grant they gave the city last year to keep those same officers on the payrolls.

Without these grants, there's no telling what would happen to those police positions.

"The loss of those jobs, I don't know what it would've done to the city," said Craig Wilcott of the College cultural Neighborhood Association. "We don't have enough police officers as it is and it puts more pressure on the neighborhood watches."

His watch group has seen some real results, catching burglars and patrolling the streets.

But they can't do much without a strong police force backbone.

"There are other areas of the city that need those police officers desperately, all you have to do is look at Flint police operation's twitter to see the number of calls that come in," Wilcott said.

ABC12 News met up with Wilcott at a Greater Flint Health Coalition meeting Tuesday.

They're planning to give away their own small grants to community groups who are looking to keep Flint safe and beautiful.

Quincy Murphy of the Garfield-Bunche Community Service Corporation is glad to hear Flint isn't losing any officers, but he thinks a safe neighborhood needs more than just law enforcement.

"We all know the crime is high, we also need to balance out the crime prevention and add some programs and jobs for our young kids in our neighborhood," Murphy said.

This grant will also help fund police mini-stations out in Flint neighborhoods.
