FLINT (WJRT) -

(07/12/12) - Hundreds of people came together Thursday in an effort to reduce Flint's crime rate.

Well of Hope hosted the third annual 'Steps to Healing a Broken Generation' at the Haskell Community Center in Flint.

More than 200 people came to the Haskell Center Thursday in an effort to reduce a growing problem in the area. The event wasn't just targeted to teenagers, but parents were asked to take a part as well.

Ninth grader Cheashia Morgan has lost two of her close friends to violence. That's why the 'Steps to Healing a Broken Generation' event hits close to home for her.

"One of my friends, she was shot in a car. Her little sister had died. It kind of put me on a rocky side. That could have happened to me," Cheashia said.

This program is aimed to give young people like Cheashia positive role models.

Chia Morgan is the coordinator, and is passionate about bringing families closer together. She started the program after two of her friends were murdered.

"I was tired of sitting and crying and losing my friends, so I felt if I could target the next generation, maybe I could prevent the next person from the heartache I've experienced," Chia Morgan said.

There are plenty of resources for parents to take advantage of while their children are here.

"We have YWCA here providing information about domestic violence because we know that is something that destroys families in communities across the city," Chia Morgan said.

Chia Morgan is encouraging people to come out and be mentors for young children as well.

Greg Burks, who's a graduate of Flint Northern High school and recent inductee into the Sports Hall of Fame at Prairie View University, was the key note speaker.

His message was about the difference between having a dream and a goal.

"Having goals, as far as going toward the future, I think that's one thing that our youth kind of get away from, having goals and kind setting those goals and when setting, I mean, what are you doing to accomplish those goals," Burks said.(07/12/12) - Hundreds of people came together Thursday in an effort to reduce Flint's crime rate.
