Downtown Flint business broken into twice in three weeks, owner says

FLINT (WJRT) -

(07/16/12) - As Flint battles being labeled the "most violent city in America," one section of the city has almost been crime free - almost.

Downtown Flint is usually not where crime occurs.

The Flint Crepe Company, open downtown since November, has been broken into twice in about a three week span, according to owner Robb Klaty.

The break-ins both occurred on Sunday mornings and right around the same time, after 11 a.m.

The crime was caught on camera the second time.

"I think we're learning. Learning how to guard against this, in the future, and trying to stay positive," Klaty said.

Klaty wants to be in downtown Flint and has no plans to leave.

"We just want to be in the center of what's going on," he said. "I believe there is a revitalization going on down here."

Klaty says he took a "significant" hit the first time his store was broken into. The second time, there was less to steal, but more is gone.

"Exact same MO," Klaty says. "(We're) confident it's the same person from before. We have those images."

In the surveillance video, you can see a man make his way into the back of the Flint Crepe Company.

He's shielding his face and even moves the surveillance camera before he moves behind the counter.

The Flint Crepe Company and other businesses are inside of the Wade Trim building in downtown Flint. The building sits on one of the busiest blocks.

It looks like the man somehow had access to a common area that connects the businesses.

At least one other store was damaged.

Those break-ins follow another, in March, at Cork on Saginaw just down the street.

"We're going to push on and learn and get better. We're not going to let them win," Klaty said.

Please call Flint Police, at 810-237-6801, if you recognize the man in the video or know anything about the crime.

These break-ins come after two reports of shots fired, since November, at a parking lot down Saginaw, near Raspberries Rhythm Bar & Grill.
