FRANKENMUTH (WJRT) -

(07/23/12) - Two hundred or so golfers, swinging away in the "drive to make a difference" - it's all part of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint's 10th annual golf outing at the Fortress in Frankenmuth.

"Not only do we have celebrities coming out, we have all about 200 donors coming out. It's a great day. We have a lot of fun, and it's about really celebrating what we can do for kids," said Jamie Gaskin, Boys & Girls Club Executive Director.

Through the golf outing and silent auction, the Club hoped to raise around $40,000.

"Every day this summer, 500 kids are in Flint, safe and well supervised, having a good time, learning, and doing recreational activities. Events like this really make that possible," Gaskin said.

Among the big names that came by to play 18 is Flint Central grad and former major league pitcher Jim Abbott.

"Flint is where I grew up. I remember people creating those kinds of opportunities for me and my friends at Pierce Elementary and Whittier. I had a chance to visit both club sites earlier this year and it had a big affect on me. You just want to help and have kids have somewhere to go," Abbott said.

While he was out on the golf course Monday supporting the Boys & Girls Club, Abbott was also supporting Team USA. In fact, 24 years ago, right around this time, he was in South Korea winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games.

"I love the Olympics and it brings back a lot of great memories, walking around the Olympic Village with all those great athletes and I can't wait for it to get started and I'll watch as much as I can. Gosh, 24 years. That's kind of crazy," Abbott said.

Over the next few weeks, Abbott looks forward to watching Claressa Shields and Geena Gall attempt to become the first Flint area athletes to bring home the gold, since he made it happen back in 1988.

"I love it, I love it. Flint has always had great athletes. We've always had a lot to be proud of in that way and that'll be something special to root for," Abbott said.

Opening Ceremonies for the Olympic Games are this coming Friday.
