Major local business is coming to the area

KOCHVILLE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(07/26/12) - It's one of Michigan's largest tourist attractions and it's coming to Mid-Michigan.

Thursday, Cabela's announced plans to open a 43,000 square foot store. It will go into the old Circuit City building on Tittabawassee Road in Kochville Township.

For years, Cabela's enthusiasts had to travel south to Dundee to shop, but starting in the spring of 2013, their journey will be a lot shorter.

The old empty Circuit City is coming back to life as a Cabela's Outpost. The popular chain is well known to hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts. Thursday's announcement went over well for one 12-year-old fisherman.

"It's pretty good. It could give me a chance to come down here instead of going all the way down to Dundee. Now I can come down here to shop and all that," said Alex Penkala.

Also coming there, jobs for about 75 full and part-time Cabela's employees.

The Outpost will be smaller than the Dundee store, but it's expected to attract customers from all over Northern Michigan.

That means other local businesses will share in the economic impact.

"It's a destination spot. We think people would come all the way up. For example, spend a weekend here or a few days," said James Riney; owner of Plato's Closet.

Longtime residents say the news gives them hope, too.

"It means jobs. It means opportunity for sportsmen to come in to the store. They had to travel before to go to Cabela's, so I think it's a good opportunity," said Pat Schullo, who has lived in the area all of her life.

"There's a lot of empty buildings around here. My son lives in South Dakota. It's booming, you come to our city, Saginaw, it looks like a ghost town," said Judy Misekow.

There's no word yet on exactly when Cabela's will start their application process.
