(07/29/12) - In 2010, Mid-Michigan lost a hometown hero.
Army Specialist Joe Johnson was killed by an explosion while serving in Afghanistan.
Since then, his family has been working to keep his memory alive.
On Saturday, Aug. 4 his family is hosting a fundraiser to raise money for a scholarship in his name.
It's called 'A Hero's Legacy: Joe's Ride'.
Registration for the motorcycle and classic car ride is from 9-10:45 a.m. It starts at Scooter's Bar and Grill, located at 6004 Torrey Road in Mundy Township. The ride starts at 11 a.m.
Registration costs $25 for drivers and $10 for passengers. The price includes breakfast and dinner. The event is sponsored by 'Helping Heroes of America', which is a non-profit, so the registration fees are tax deductible.
One of the stops along the ride will be at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly Township. That's where Spc. Johnson is buried. While there, a Patriot Guard Rider will bless the ride.
Money raised will go into a scholarship in Spc. Johnson's name. Already, the family has awarded two scholarships to two Carman Ainsworth High School students. Carman Ainsworth is the district Spc. Johnson graduated from.
You can register at the event on Saturday morning, or call Spc. Johnson's mom. Teri Johnson's phone number is 810-233-3043.
