Saginaw students brushing up on math skills while on summer vacation

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(08/01/12) - It's summer vacation, but that's not stopping some Saginaw County kids from brushing up on their math skills.

SVSU is partnering with Ruben Daniels Middle School in a six-week program, designed to help students improve their math performance.

About 120 middle school kids are going through this program, and they say it will give them a huge leg up when the school year starts.

"The teachers in class don't have enough time to explain it like the students do," said D'Nesha Peete, an eighth grader going through the summer program.

She used to be a C student in math, but the new summer learning program is giving her new confidence.

"They didn't stop teaching us until we got it right and they made sure we knew it, we knew the math," she said.

Saginaw high school teens have been mentoring middle school students, and those high school teens also work with SVSU students.

"In the process really begin to create a generation of scientists, of technologists of individuals who are very, very comfortable with the sciences and technology," said Joseph Ofori-Dankwa, professor of international business at SVSU.

But sharper math skills aren't the only thing kids are getting out of the experience.

"A lot of people helped me especially in math, I felt like I should help others," said Lily Moncman, a senior in the program.

(9/14/14) - Roughly 400-500 community members made their way out for the Second Annual "Stop the Violence" event in Flint Sunday. Beginning with a parade that started at East Pierson Road and culminating at Berston Field House, rally-goers were met with a slew of vendors, activities and food that was put on by the Community Take-Back Organization. And with violent crime down in the city this year, the new theme attached to the event this time around was a "Celebration of Life".
