(08/03/12) - There's a shortage of physicians in the state of Michigan.
That's according to Ernie Yoder, who serves as the dean in the College of Medicine at Central Michigan University.
In August 2013, classes will start for the newly launched program for CMU med students.
Students who applied for the program are now finding out exactly what the program has to offer.
Yoder says his office has received more than 1,400 applications, but only 60 will get accepted into the College of Medicine.
The newly opened program targets rural communities.
More than 80 interested candidates are touring the College of Medicine building at Central Michigan University.
"I'm really excited about what CMU is doing with their medical school and how they're focused on under served populations. I work right now at St. Mary's and I've seen just the need for more physicians in Grand Rapids area, but also in Saginaw," said Calhoun Community College senior Jordan Dooley.
For the first two years, medical students will attend classes in Mount Pleasant, where they will receive clinical experience. As students enter their third and fourth year, they'll be based in Saginaw.
"Today is an information day here at the college. It was opened to perspective students and parents of perspective students to come and learn more about our mission. Our vision. To see the building and to learn whether this might be a fit for their medical education," Yoder said.
He says the program is designed to address the physician shortage in Saginaw as well as other urban and rural areas.
In the meantime, students are keeping their fingers crossed.
"I'm just really excited for the tour and see what happens in the next six months with our application process and stuff and hopefully I'll be attending med school next fall," said CMU senior Saavia Girgal.
The deadline for applications is December.
Yoder says his program will partner with St. Mary's and Covenant Hospitals in Saginaw.
A decision for the exact location for the Saginaw buildings has not been made at this time.
