(08/09/12) - Engineering students are cleaning soil from the shoreline of the Saginaw Bay.
Saginaw Valley State University students designed and built a machine to remove the muck as a way to improve the image of the beach.
The beach is a major tourist attraction, but because of the smell, it has struggled to get its appeal back.
The prototype that the students built from the ground up has a rolling cage that houses the inlet nozzle to an eight horse power pump.
The machine makes it easier to vacuum up the soil and sand.
This was a six month project.
SVSU students have been working with Bay City Park leaders and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to get the necessary approvals in order to do their testing.
