Hot rods and coupes don't let rain stop their cruise

Posted: Updated:

(08/10/12) - As we get closer to Back to the Bricks Week, we find some car lovers just can't wait. Despite the weather, several classic cars could be seen cruising around Flint Friday.

The rain came down in buckets, but the owners of coupes from the '30s and '40s just shrugged it off. Nothing could keep them from motoring through the Vehicle City.

"They're not afraid of a little bit of rain. They found out the rain's not going to wash the paint off. So they drive them," said Al Hatch of the Back to the Bricks committee.

The owner of a 1934 Ford all-steel coupe that has been in the family for years was
one of those dodging the rain drops. He called it the baddest car in downtown Flint.

"Dad would probably roll over in his grave now. But we'll clean it up, no bid deal," said Keith Damon.

Cars from this era back fond memories.

"You know what's really cool? You get a lot of thumbs up. People like them and they all wave. It generates a lot of smiles and that's what makes it all worth while," Hatch said.

Chevrolet was well represented Friday with a 1946 coupe.

"The car's an excuse to get out, socialize, have fun, to see the country, to meet people, to do everything possible that you've ever dreamed of doing and I'm trying to," said Karen Borton.

Pre-World War Two iron will be well represented at this year's Back to the Bricks.

"It's got power. It's got the great looks. It's got a modern drivetrain in it. A lot of these cars have air conditioning, power windows, power steering, you name it," Hatch said.

Take from this crowd - cars from the '50s and '60s don't stand a chance against these bad boys - and girls.

ABC12 will have miles and miles of coverage of Back to the Brick, starting next Monday. Don't miss a minute of it.
