Proposal looks into Saginaw PD contracting with sheriff department, protestors march outside city hall

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(08/13/12) - It's a plan to save money, but a proposal to contract Saginaw City police with the sheriff's department is raising a few eyebrows.

The details are still being worked out, but some are worried that it could mean fewer officers and slower response times.

Rows of protestors clutched signs outside Saginaw City Hall Monday afternoon. A proposal to have the Saginaw County sheriff's department contract with the city's police department is leaving officers' families with questions.

"Will we be able to keep our house? Will we have to sell our home? That's scary, I have three children we're supporting, petrifying," said Marcia Rabideau, who's married to a city detective.

There are very few answers for the families of the men and women in blue, because the proposal is in the early stages. In fact, the sheriff's plan just made it to city hall on Monday.

As of now, according to the city manger's office, if the plan is approved as is, all of the city's police officers would keep their jobs.

However, those positions would be absorbed by the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department creating one unit.

It's just one idea that could help the city's projected $2 million shortfall.

It's an idea to save money, but these protestors are asking 'at what price?'

"Settle this crime, calm it down, it's a bad time to be making a big chance," said Tom Contreras, a protestor from Bridgeport.

The city manager's office is going to review the proposal before releasing those details to the public.
