People forced to evacuate after gas leak

Posted: Updated:

(08/18/12) - At least 16 people were forced to evacuate after construction crews hit a gas main in Bay City.

It happened shortly after 6:30, near the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Johnson Street. That's on the city's east side.

People were able to go back in their homes after 8 p.m. That's when everything was under control.

One neighbor says she's still waiting to hear back from Consumers Energy so she can get her gas turned back on.

She described that evacuation process.

"Several of my neighbors and I were down the block and I think we were out of the house for a couple of hours before we were allowed back in. You could smell the gas down the street and it's just disruptive. Something that you don't expect on a Friday evening," said Peggy Graves.

At least three homes were impacted by the gas leak.
