College students move on campus

KOCHVILLE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(08/22/12)- Students across Mid-Michigan are heading back to class soon. That means thousands will be moving into their college dorms.

At Saginaw Valley State University, more than 2,700 students will be moving to campus.

JJ Boehm, the director of media relations, says this is the third year in a row that the school has had more than 2,700 freshmen, as well as upper classman, to move on campus.

He credits that to having an increase in student housing on campus.

Campus leaders say the biggest problem they see when it comes to move-in day is that students aren't taking the time to read their information booklet. It lets them know what they can and cannot bring into their dorm rooms.

Another issue, over packing.

Saginaw Valley State University freshmen Kier Robertson just moved from Detroit. She showed ABC12 her luggage.

"My grandmother bought me some stuff for the kitchen. I still have to make a run to Walmart for a lot of stuff. This isn't it," she said.

Boehm wants students to remember that the rooms are furnished and freshmen, as well as upper classmen, should only bring what they need.

"Occasionally you'll have students that decide that they need everything that they have at home to bring with them to their college dorm room. So we encourage them to try to work it out with their roommates. Spend some time talking about what they're going to be bringing to avoid duplication and then you can always add additional things later," he explained.

That's something college freshman Grand Fonds is remembering to do.

"I was trying to pack light because I didn't want to spend all day putting stuff in my room. I try to bring the bare necessities. I didn't bring any personal items. I'm not bringing any for the first year," he said.

Boehm says freshmen are moving in Wednesday and Thursday. Then upper classman will move in Friday and Saturday.
