(08/28/12) - As the Republican National Convention got underway in Tampa Tuesday, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Pete Hoekstra was in Mid-Michigan launching his 'We did build this' tour.
ABC12 caught up with him in Frankenmuth at Bronner's Christmas Wonderland.
While he was introducing himself there, members of the citizens watchdog group Progress Michigan made a stop in Flint.
They unveiled a new TV ad they say highlights Hoekstra's connection with Washington lobbyists and support for a radical budget plan.
"This is just an opportunity to reintroduce politician Pete Hoekstra and his record as a member of congress," says Progress Michigan Executive Director Zack Pohl.
"We're going to see a lot of these negative ads over the next 10 weeks," Hoekstra says.
"They want to switch the issue. Debbie Stabenow does not want to be held accountable for her record over the last 12 years."
"Clearly this is a battle ground state. I can win this race," Hoekstra says.
Democrat Senator Debbie Stabenow released a statement Tuesday. It says, in part, "Michigan doesn't need politicians like Hoekstra who help rig the rules for special interests. We need someone like Debbie who fights for Michigan families."
