New UM-Flint students explore downtown restaurants

(08/29/12) - University of Michigan-Flint students moved into the First Street Residence Hall Wednesday, and all those fresh faces are going to need somewhere to eat this school year.

Wednesday night, UM-Flint hosted its annual Taste of Downtown.

New students staying at the UM-Flint residence hall found they don't have to go very far to order downtown delicacies.

"We've got eight large groups going around to a bunch of the restaurants downtown. They're getting a sample of the food, they're hearing about some of the downtown businesses," said Robert Burack, a resident adviser at the First Street Residence Hall.

UM-Flint took their new residents on a walking tour through Saginaw Street, and helped them get acquainted with the area.

"I like it. I haven't really been to downtown Flint, so I get to know what foods I like and if I don't want dorm food I can come to Saginaw Street and get food from here," said freshman Robyn Brown.

It's not bad for local businesses either; they get to show off their finest food. Some students like freshman Alexis Harvey have been living in Flint, but they never realized what downtown is all about.

"I always pass by everything down here but I never go in. Now that I know what's here and what tastes good, I'll definitely be coming here more often," Harvey said.

Classes for students start Sept. 4.
