SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(08/30/12) - A 6-year-old was shot and killed in Saginaw while standing in her driveway with a man family members say is her father. He was also hurt.

The shooting happened around 10:30 Wednesday night in the 1100 block of Essling. That's the same neighborhood where 21-year old Bobby Bailey was shot and killed just hours before. That shooting was in the 1400 block of Dillon, just blocks away.

Police say the 6-year-old died shortly after being taken to the hospital. They're not releasing much information at this time.

Family members who did not want to speak on camera showed us the bullet holes that remain in their door from Wednesday night's shooting that took the life of a child.

They say the 6-year-old who died was Layla Jones. Her aunt tells us that Layla was in town from Wisconsin visiting her father, Shawrone. According to the family, Shawrone Jones is still in the hospital at St. Mary's in critical condition.

Sandra Parker, who has lived in this neighborhood for the past four years, says she heard several gunshots Wednesday night.

My daughter was telling me, 'mamma, get down, mamma.' I couldn't do nothing but hit my floor and when I hit the floor, I called the police as soon as I hit the floor," Parker said. "I'm going to move from out here. I've got grandkids that live out here and I can't deal with it no more. It's crazy. You taking people lives. Innocent people lives for nothing."

Detective Sgt. Brent VanderHaar says police are investigating if the shootings were related to the murder of Bailey. No arrests have been made at this time.

"No motive yet. We're not sure if the two are related. The investigation is ongoing on both of them. We're trying to determine if they may be related. Maybe a retaliation for the earlier shooting. We're not sure yet," VanderHaar said.

Neighbors blame some of the violence on gangs and lack of police patrolling their street.

"This is too much. This right here is too much. They had security out here, HUD. Now they don't even have security out here. It was kind of like a little bit better but now that the security is gone from out here at Saginaw Housing Commission, it's going crazy," Parker said.

Vanderhaar says state police are assisting Saginaw Police with patrols. They try to use them in the areas they're needed the most.

About a month ago, there was another shooting in the same neighborhood. No one died in that incident, but police are looking to see if it could also be connected.
