SAGINAW (WJRT) -
(08/30/12) - Tragedy strikes a Saginaw neighborhood as a 6-year-old girl is shot and killed. She was shot while standing in her driveway with a man family members say is her father.
He was also shot, and taken to the hospital. This happened in the same neighborhood where just hours before, a 21-year-old was shot and killed.
Both of the victims' families are fed up with the senseless violence.
Two shootings in one night is just too much for the Saginaw neighborhood. Neighbors, family and friends marched the streets Thursday afternoon, praying for peace.
One of those shootings claimed the life of a six-year-old, whose family says is Layla Jones.
"She was the beautifulest little girl you ever see, full of life, happy, full of joy, she loved her mom, loved her dad, her brother," said Yolanda Cope, Layla's aunt.
She says Layla was in town from Wisconsin. She and her dad were visiting Yolanda's home on Essling Street when they walked outside to get in their car around 10:30 p.m.
She says that's when someone drove by and shot at them, killing the little girl.
And just hours before, a few streets away, 21-year-old Bobby Bailey was also shot and killed. His family joined hands and prayed for an end to the killing.
"I never thought it would've happened to my nephew out of all people, I mean he didn't bother no body, he didn't claim no type of sides, he didn't sell drugs, none of that type of stuff," said Stephanie Cooper, Bailey's aunt.
Police are still investigating both shootings. They aren't sure if they are related.
