Michigan leaders talk about the DNC

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (WJRT) -

(09/03/12) - A week to draw contrasts. That's what Michigan Democratic leaders say the plan is going into the first official day of the Democratic National Convention Tuesday.

The head of the Michigan Democratic Party says President Obama and Mitt Romney's visions for our country create two distinctive paths. And he's here making the case that President Obama's path has already helped Michigan.

"In our darkest hour, the president had our back. Mitt Romney would've stabbed us in the back," said Mark Brewer.

Harsh words for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney from Michigan Democratic Party chair Mark Brewer.

Brewer was talking about  the auto bailout, which will be a major talking point here at the DNC.

"If he had not stepped up and rescued the domestic auto industry, we would've seen hundreds of thousands of people laid off, a million jobs lost nationwide," Brewer said.

That said, the latest Epic-MRA poll shows Obama leads Romney by just three percentage points, much closer than in 2008.

So how can Brewer and the Michigan Democrats make sure the state stays in the blue column this year?

"We've seen how the Republicans will take us back to the failed policies of George Bush that got us into this mess. We're going to spend the next nine weeks talking to the voters about the contrast between these two tickets," Brewer said.

Several Michiganders will have big speaking roles at the convention, including former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.
