Protestors march outside Bay City Brian's House

Posted: Updated:

(09/03/12) - After nearly 20 years of hospice care in Mid-Michigan, the doors of Brian's House are closed to new patients.

Monday, a group of protestors says it could be the first step to closing the facilities permanently.

"Bay City needs this building," said Jackie DeLorge, who coordinated the protest.

To many, it's more than just bricks. Brian's House gives terminally ill patients somewhere peaceful to spend their last days, but McLaren Homecare Group says changes in Medicare funding forced them to stop accepting new patients at both their Bay City and Davison locations.

That's what brought protestors to Bay City on Labor Day afternoon, they say the center is too important to lose.

"Brian's House gave us the most wonderful last 10 days we could've had with my mom and it broke my heart to find it was closing and other families aren't going to have what we had," said Mary Kelly, whose mother passed at the center.

"I recently buried my father a year ago, unfortunately he didn't make it here, but this is where he needed to come," said Jill Toporski. "It just breaks my heart that people don't have that opportunity to have that any more."

McLaren tells us they are looking at ways to keep the facility open, and this group says they want to be involved.

"If there is a will there's a way, the people are here, the people are not going to go away and we want McLaren to talk to us," DeLorge said.

The change could impact as many as 50 employees. McLaren says they're working to find them other positions.
