(09/10/12) - A standoff that lasted roughly 20 hours in suburban Detroit is now over. The suspect inside was found dead.
West Bloomfield Township Police Officer Patrick O'Rourke was shot and killed responding to a domestic situation at the home Sunday night. O'Rourke lived in Livingston County's Tyrone Township.
It all began around 10 p.m. Sunday in West Bloomfield Township.
Published reports indicate the officers may have thought the man inside the home, 50-year-old Rick Coley, had committed suicide. It's believed Coley opened fire as police called out his name.
It's believed Coley fired through a door and wall, hitting Officer O'Rourke. He was pronounced dead at a Pontiac hospital. Officers at his home Monday morning declined comment.
The suspect was a former auto industry executive whose venture capital company faced legal scrutiny. He was also going through a divorce.
The victim was a 39-year-old father of four and had been an officer for 12 years.
