Facebook users decide Chase Community Giving winner

FLINT (WJRT) -

(09/10/12) - Attention Facebook users. You have the chance to make a real difference for one of your favorite charities.

It's part of the Chase Community Giving contest and many Mid-Michigan agencies hope they'll get your vote!

It's a national competition, so there's hundreds of non-profit agencies on the ballot. Among them, a number of organizations that hope Mid-Michigan residents will show their voting power.

"We would help everyone if we could," says Meg Sprecher who works at the Shelter of Flint. For the past 30 years, people in need of a roof over their head or a warm meal have come here.

"Right now we are seeing an incredible increase in people needing services. Every month we're getting about six to 700 calls. That number just increases."

But what doesn't increase is funding. That's why many Mid-Michigan agencies registered for the Chase Community Giving competition. Since 2009, Chase Bank has donated more than $20 million to non-profits, and it's all decided by voters. Each person can vote two times and you can earn extra votes by sharing the Facebook page.

"It's a huge opportunity for us," Sprecher said. "Funds like this would open so many doors for us to provide programming for the children, for the adults. The kids come in, they're often in a state of turmoil. We do our best to offer some kind of normalcy."

Sprecher says she loves the idea that voters get to decide. "I think it's a great idea. Everyone has these issues they feel invested in. For those who choose to be involved, this is a great way to be involved and make sure your voices are heard."

The deadline is Sept. 19.
